The Re-Marketing of Eva
At first I wasn’t going to say anything about the new evangelion announcement as many other, better blogs had talked about it, but then I remembered I would talk about it in the desu radio post, so I guess I can think up some things to say.
Just to get things clear the announcement is for four new movies that are a ” remake but with a new story “. I have no idea what that means. The only thing I can think of is that what they’re doing is like a sidestory to the main plot, which may or may not work well. I was disappointed to find that they’re not going to scatter around words at all, which I always kind of thought was a trademark of eva, so that’s not so great. Also the producers say that the story is gonna be easy to get into for new people but not redundant for those who have already seen it. Isn’t the whole point of eva the complex ” wtf is going on ” plot?
Of course we all know why there’s a new eva project: Gainax is hungry for money. Tenth anniversary, ton of hype floating up again, perfect time to cash in on the biggest anime cashcow ever. Realizing this is all a big marketing ploy makes it hard for me to think I’ll enjoy these movies when they come out, cause I never really thought eva was lacking anything. The orignal stuff was unique for the time and, if not wrapping up the actual plot, gave a satisfactory conclusion to the character’s. Eva would be nothing without how it ended, but then again I don’t know if thier gonna mess with the original ending or not in this remake/retelling. Also I have to wonder how the hell did Hideaki ” I hate otaku ” Anno decide to come back and direct this? Shouldn’t he have a mass hatred for the everything eva has become? I really can’t help but think this whole thing is a bad idea. Remaking Kanon is one thing. Kanon’s not a ground-breaking classic anime. You just can’t add new visuals to that.
On a somewhat related note a new Shuffle series called ” Shuffle! Memories ” is starting this winter. Apparently it’s also a mix of new and old content like these eva movies. You know I was really hoping for a Tick Tack anime instead…
