Impressions: Hidamari Sketch

From left to right: Sae, Hiro, Miyu, and Yuno.
Hidamari Sketch is a cutesy comedy/slice-of-life show about four girls in an art school. There’s Yuno, the ” main girl ” who’s the naive and gullible type; her eccentric friend Miyu, who’s the crazy type that says random things and loves food; Sae, the cool megane sempai; and Hiro, Sae’s friend who cares a lot about her weight and cannot travel through space and time. Then there’s Yoshinoya-sensei, the crazy teacher who loves cosplay and pretending she’s young. Hands down the best character in the show so far. She really does love cosplay, to the point where she’s called the ” Cosplay Queen ” among her students and makes individual New Year’s cards of her cosplaying. The art style is very simplistic but cute at the same time, which works fine since all the girls are incredibly moe anyways. The art also exaggerates a lot, like spreading out the girls faces till they fill the whole screen for comedic effect. Hidamari is adapted from a 4koma strip, so the comedy’s not the ” use as many references as possible ” kind of paniponi. To me, the humor is similiar to the kind that was in Mahoraba, which was just cute girls doing outlandishly cute things. It’s not exactly laugh out loud funny, but it’ll put a smile on your face for a half hour. Here’s to more subs soon hopefully.
