The Return of Nekomimi Mode
Finally, after like two years, the subs for episode 26 of Tsukuyomi Moon Phase finally come out. And I thought the wait for StrikerS subs was long. In that time I could of bought the R1 DVD for the episode, but I’m a cheapskate who likes waiting for boxsets. This was great to watch, just to see all the characters again and hear their voices. Tsukuyomi holds an special place in my heart, being one of the first series I started watching fansubbed back in ‘04, and also the first time hearing Chiwa Saitou’s voice. Good times. Anyways, on to the actual episode.
This episode was Akiko Shinbo at his most surreal. The whole store is now floating on the ocean, no one knows why, but they don’t care and just live normally. Seiji is the only one that acts freaked out, showing some expressions that would even rival Saitou’s from NHK. There’s a lot of wacky scenes, like Grandpa hunting fish on a sea turtle while wearing that weird dress with a duck coming out from the crotch. Hiromi appears out of no where riding dolphins, and is proclaimed the goddess of the sea by a bunch of sailors passing by, all of whom look like Hazuki’s butler from the first episode. And Art pulls out the plug of the store, causing it to sink and everyone gets eaten by a whale. Yeah, bunch of weird stuff.
However, past the psychedelic plot, there’s actually a sweeter storyline about Art and Hazuki. Since Art hasn’t been around people all her life, she tries to gain attention in odd ways, like torturing Haiji to death and pulling out the aformentioned plug. At first Hazuki hates her for this, but realized Art just wants attention from her older sister, and decides to stick up for her when she gets in trouble. Then Art gets all cute and apologizes. Also great bonding moment between Hazuki and Hikaru on what it means to be older sisters. Great episode to remind me why I love this series: awesome characters, awesome animation, and awesome music. I’ll really need to buy this on dvd one day, hopefully when that boxset becomes available.
