Story:

Money hungry Najima Osana is dragged into the crazy world of doujinshi by her friend Tsuyuri, a self-proclaimed author of rape manga and head of the circle Panty Revolution. Drawn in by the allure of selling thousands of doujin for millions of yen, Osana pledges to become the greatest, and most profitable, mangaka ever. There’s also Justice, a huge man who exemplifies the idea of art for art’s sake and might be a pedophile. This is corroborated by the blonde loli Sora Kitano who is always seen clinging to him. Together, this set of misfits fights in the doujin world of comiket!

Impressions:

The original author of Doujin Work is Hiroyuki, a man best known for his many hilarious and perverted Type-Moon doujins. “A cat is fine, too,” ring any bells? Already being a fan of his unique brand of comedy, I had to check Doujin Work out; and I’m pleased to say it fulfilled most of my expectations. I’m glad that Hiroyuki was able to create original characters that could be just as crazy as he made the TM characters out to be. Osana is a somewhat refreshing lead, having no qualms about doing everything for money in the sacred world of doujin. Tsuruya is great for her completely deadpan humor, especially when talking about doing perverted things all night long. Justice is the greatest character so far. He’s an almost-pedophile mangaka who has a loli clinging to him and can fire lasers from his eyes. How awesome is that? Also looks a lot like a grown up Shiki. A grown up perverted Shiki.

The portrayal of comiket in this series reminds me more of Comic Party then Genshiken or Lucky Star; where more focus is on the circles and authors than the actual doujin. The animation is understandably sparse, though I don’t think that particularly helps or harms a series like this. As long as the characters aren’t completely off-model, it’s alright. I do think the OP and ED are a little too long for thirteen minute episodes. Doujin Work looks to be a humorous little series to follow for the summer, and its length means it should be easy to keep up with. Out of curiosity, does anybody know the series that runs alongside Doujin Work in that timespot? Here’s the OP:
