I just watched the movie recently and my first thought was OMFG THE ANIMATION! It seemed even more awesome since I was comparing it to the crappy-looking series, but still man, I miss that glorious movie-quality 80's cel animation. That said, Roy's death is TOTALLY different in the anime. I'll leave it at that. I couldn’t remember whether you’re supposed to watch the series or the movie first, so I started with the series. And the final battle is, as you say, eye-popping.
