This is a historically important movie that can be created with creation of Anime Music business. Anime songs did sell before this movie, but that is like comparing the first moving pictures of beginning of 20th century to Citizen kane.

Yeah, I'm aware of how Roy's death is in the anime, but I think the movie still did a good job of showing how completely awesome this guy is in the short time before he sacrificed himself.

I couldn't remember whether you're supposed to watch the series or the movie first, so I started with the series. I just watched the movie recently and my first thought was OMFG THE ANIMATION! It seemed even more awesome since I was comparing it to the crappy-looking series, but still man, I miss that glorious movie-quality 80's cel animation.

That said, Roy's death is TOTALLY different in the anime. I'll leave it at that.

Much like yourself, I thought DYRL? was a well-animated Macross primer, although I'm told some fairly important changes were made from the original series. And the final battle is, as you say, eye-popping.
