In some ways this is a complicated first episode, as there’s a lot of names and characters thrown around that aren’t wholly relevant. On the other hand, the premise is pretty simply. Birdy, an alien cop, comes to earth to hunt a criminal and in the process accidentally kills a guy, Tsutomu, and to rectify her mistake takes his mind into her body. Hijinks ensue. I love Birdy already. She’s an awesome, crime fighting, ass kicking kind of gal that you don’t find all that often these days. She’s definitely a throwback to the henshin heroines of tokusatsu. Even reminds me of Cutie Honey in some ways.

The show also reminds me a lot of Skull Man, as a modern take on an old classic, but Birdy is looking to be a lot less serious and more comedic. Just look at Tute, Birdy’s robotic partner. To blend in on Earth he basically becomes a flirtatious transexual! How great is that? The action scenes are also very cool and are actually vibrant and animated, unlike the speed lines and camera pans other tries confuse action with. Sadly the OP and ED are pretty lackluster, but you can’t always get everything. With a name like Birdy the Mighty I think this is going to be a fun ride.
