Well I'm up to ep 16 (stopped watching for a few months to finish some other shows), and I can tell you that you indeed ARE in for a Gundam'd good time. :) The mecha design may not be appealing, but you can look forward to some tense action, and wonderful character development. Despite being only about halfway through, X has one of my favorite Gundam casts to date.

Ah, so that's why people keep saying X was crappy b/c it got cut off. I watched it too long ago to remember how long it was, and since I got a really good impression of it back then (X-gundam had one of my favourite designs) I was confused when I heard people trashing it. I guess that's why ~_~

I'm glad to hear you think the score's amazing too. It has such sweeping brilliance that sometimes I'm tempted to just close my eyes and focus on the music when I'm watching an episode of X. As for the show itself, I'm convinced that it has a core of good solid quality, and now and then the show does something quite brave (if I recall correctly, there's one episode which doesn't have a single moment of screentime for the title Mobile Suit).

And Jamil isn't just a mix of Bright and an older Amuro, he has Quattro's shades!

It's definitely one of the stronger Gundam shows, I always thought. The reason it was 39 episodes is, I think, that it came too soon after Wing and didn't pander to the fangirls anywhere near as much so people were a bit disappointed (even though it's infinitely better than Wing, which is, IMO, the second-worst Gundam show, second only to Destiny) and its initial ratings didn't do anywhere near what Sunrise were hoping. On top of that, the mecha were nowhere near as exploitable for creating Gunpla. So because of the lower ratings, they decided to change its timeslot halfway into its run, which alienated all their viewers and basically destroyed what ratings they already had. So they canned it early.

I think they learned their lesson, though. They went out of their way to split Gundam 00 into two discrete seasons when they realised that the timeslot they'd penciled in for it was going to change.

Glad to see someone checking out this older series, as it is my second favorite Gundam series there is; I'd say its probably the most overlooked Gundam incarnation, so I'm happy to see you're enjoying it and making the effort =)
