It's based on a novel series so really I should focus on the author.

You need to develop this more, and it lacks focus on the studio that made the anime. You also summarize a lot.

Most beautiful piece I have ever read on logh.

"“Politics always takes vengeance on those that belittle it.”

My favorite quote as well.

As glamorous and interesting as Reinhard, his Empire and his admirals are...the show does leave the viewer with the impression that the system demands further reforms in a slightly more democratic direction. And as reluctant as the Kaiser was to embrace them, he didn't stand in their way either, so the rule of law wins over authoritarianism in the end. I'd say that's a good message.

Of course, making an anime (or novel) about such a long, procedural and mostly peaceful (or just plain boring) process tends to leave little room for heroes and legends, when their work is done and already chronicled.

Reunetal's rebellion seemed like a questionable idea on paper, but the show does a remarkable job and by the end I had completely bought it and was sad to see him go, melodrama and all.

Oberstein was admirable, in a way, mostly because he was far more selfless than his character type usually tends to be. It's hard to develop such manipulative characters well, since they tend to be unsympathetic on principle alone even if their actions are "cool" enough.

Julian carries a little too much of Yang's spirit, one might say at first glance, but in the end he grows into the role and comes across as his own man.

Truniht...good riddance to bad rubbish.

"I’ll be starting on the Gaiden stories soon, but I wonder if their affect will be diminished since I know what happens. Though they’re probably meant to be nostalgia fuel anyway."

That's pretty much what keeps delaying me from starting them, more or less, but since initiative isn't a problem...I can see you having better luck.

Yeah, I think you missed one of the large points of the show that no side can be so easily summed up. There was also a very much pro-democracy bent that I feel the show justified by showing that no matter how great Reinhard was everybody acted like idiots without him.

I'll just say this : until episodes 70+ i didnt even think of taking sides, but after a certain point and till the very end i gradually began to feel absolute disgust with Alliance/Rebel characters.
Democracy exporting scum, much like the modern USofA. In one of the latest episodes Julian ponders over whether live in peace with the Empire - or to wage war for the glory of democracy while screaming "Die, kaiser !"...its needless to say what the decision was.
Not to mention promiscuous scum like Poplan or Shenkopp...very fitting role models for modern USofA as well.

Whereas Empire "heroes" are honorable and decent - Rebel "heroes" are unscrupulous hypocrites and basically just your garden variety terrorists.

Sieg Kaiser !
