Webster Would Be Ashamed

Really now, is that necessary? Is ordained that complicated of a word, and if it is than why use it in the first place? I’m a generally patient guy when it comes to fansubs and their problems, but I just have to shake my head at this.

Mahoraba: End

Posted by Demian @ 10:53 am, June 30th, 2008

Finally my journey with Mahoraba ends as the final chapters of the manga are translated. I would like to thank Hyioko no Gao for all their work on the project. Despite the lengths of time I’m glad they completed it. To me, Mahoraba, both anime and manga, is one of the underrated gems of the last decade. Before the slice-of-life staples of ARIA and Hidamari Sketch, there was Mahoraba: a charming story of very different individuals living together. Often humorous and sometimes bittersweet, it’s truly a work to remember. I’m sad to see it end, but the final chapter is just so like Mahoraba that I can’t help but enjoy it anyways. Like the characters themselves, I’m glad all my times at Narutakisou were happy ones.

Macross Mysteries

Macross Frontier adds another mystery to its ever growing list with the appearance of the supposedly original SDF-1 Macross on Gallia IV. However, this can’t be possible as the original Macross is supposed to be on Earth, or at least that’s what I’ve been told. My only information on the original Macross comes from Do You Remember Love? and that wasn’t even canon. Kawamori couldn’t make it easy for us and just put Megaroad-1 in there, he has to confuse us even more. It’s not like the Macross Zero references, mysterious alien that looks like AFOS, vajra, Brera, and all the “everything is going according to plan” lines aren’t confusing enough.

My personal theory for this newest mystery is that the Macross featured here is actually some massive replica used in the filming of the DYRL movie, which is why DYRL was the ED song for this episode. Ranka’s version is just as beautiful as Minmei’s, though a little too techno popish, if that makes sense at all. Now this flimsy theory will be completely blown apart if there’s any official material saying that DYRL was nothing more than an in-universe CG extravaganza, but if there’s one thing Macross Frontier fans have to be used to it’s theories proving wrong (except for my theory stating that Brera and Ranka are siblings, cause that just has to be true).

I’m Back from Hiatus, and Other Musings from the Break

For about the last week I’ve been thinking more often “I’d really like to blog about this,” which I take as a signal to mean my creative malaise of the last month is probably over. I didn’t even look at the blog for a month and feel refreshed and recharged now. Looking back, it was probably my own artificially strict updating that wore me out, and the fact that the spring season was so terrible I was hardly watching anything at all. I’m not complaining though; gave me time to discover how freaking awesome Doctor Who is to watch. So I will say I’m back to regular blogging now, though the updates may not be as often, or may just be shorter; I’m going to be doing things a little looser now to see what works best.

Now for the promised musing of the title. I was in Boston for the last week on vacation. Great city to see btw. While I was checking out a Borders there, since my own hometown tragically lacks one, I discovered two titles in the manga section I’ve been looking for. One was the second volume of Gyo, which is just as grotesquely amusing as the first. Sadly the series great ideas don’t amount to much and the anti-climatic conclusion feels like any other apocalyptic movie cliche. However, the other thing I discovered I didn’t expect to find at all: Volume 3 of Trinity Blood Rage Against the Moons.

Physical proof that Trinity Blood V.3 actually exists

Now, back before I went on vacation there was a big thing about Tokyopop canceling solicitations with its retailers for certain series, and Trinity Blood was one of them, so I was certain the series was cancelled seeing as how Tokyopop hates its light novels and such. I immediately snatched up the volume and thanked the anime gods for letting me find it. I don’t know if Borders just got the volume before Tokyopop sent out its letter or even if Trinity Blood may still be canceled, but I’m glad I at least got my hands on one more volume.

And I still can’t take pictures worth crap. I fear for my Boston photo’s.

Oh, and my volumes of Gaogaigar, Zeta Gundam, and Macross Plus came in, so it already looks to be a good mecha week. (Or maybe I should call it tree planting week.)
