Twelve Anime Moments of the Year (For Me): Code Geass
One the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me: five ZERO!, four VOLTEKKA!, three PRIMAL SCREAMS OF HOT BLOODED FURY!, two(million) RONs!, and one GIGA DRILL BREAKER!
This is the fifth post in a series as I look at the twelve best anime moments of the year from shows I watched. Key there being watched, as a few of these moments are going to be from some pretty old stuff, but I think they’re damn good enough to talk about at any time. This is a joint ABC blogging project with other contributions from Roxas, CCYoshi, Orion, Owen S, Xerox, Nekoron, Martin, Michael Huang, usagijen, and Moogy. Yeah, there’s a lot of us. If you haven’t seen Code Geass then go watch it now, as this post contains some massive spoilers.
Code Geass is definitely one of the more popular shows of the year. Its insane characters and melodramatic plot made for perfect endless blog speculation. While many would probably say the final tragedy of Euphemia’s massacre is the most memorable moment of the show, I differ and instead enjoy the final minutes of episode 25, essentially season 1’s cliffhanger. The setup is perfect, with an insane(r) Suzaku finally facing off with Lelouch on even ground. The reveal of Lelouch as Zero was a chilling moment, with the helmet cracking to reveal Lelouch’s now almost inhuman face, a man who has gone beyond the limits of good and evil. Kallen’s reaction is also great for summing up her betrayed feelings of love for Zero.
Everyone remembers the cliffhanger ending, with both Lelouch and Suzaku shooting at the same time before the screen went blank. While I hate that kind of non-conclusion, it definitely makes me want to watch more geass. The final moments really sum up everything I love about the series - intense character and plot driven melodrama - and hate - Lelouch’s and Suzaku’s endless stupidity. Lelouch really should of just hired someone to protect Nunnally already and Suzaku’s way too obsessed with his own ridiculous ideals. Still, I love the show and can’t wait to see the outcome between the two when season 2 premieres next year. My prediction: Kallen shoots Suzaku while Lelouch is injured by Suzaku’s bullet and Kallen is forced to rescue him.
I was kinda silly to think that the series would actually end at episode 25. Maybe the built-up tension was affecting me as well and I just wanted it to end already. But I can’t say that I’m unhappy that I was wrong
Yeah I agree its a killer cliffhanger, but for me, Euphie’s massacre left a deeper impression and maybe even a permanent scar not only in Code Geass but within fans as well.

The cliffhanger ending felt a little rushed to me, but I’m not the best judge of television writing.
But I think Euphie’s massacre was more striking because it was more unexpected. But you’re right that the last moments do contain in a nutshell a lot of what makes the series great, and I’m glad to see someone sticking up for the ending, which draws a lot of flak.

Hmm, too many ‘buts’ in that comment, reading it back over. But such is life.

Code Geass has a really great story which impressed me very much, which I csn say rarely about any anime I’ve watched so far. I remember I started watching it after episode 23 was out and damn was I looking forward to the final (finished the 23 episodes in just 2 days, was so much sucked in by the story).
It was shocking what Euphie did, however I expected Lelouch’s Geass to become permanent as this other guy (dunno his name anymore, with Geass in both eyes) had become that way and so it was only a matter of time for Lelouch that his Geass would evolve as well.
The scene was nice, I agree. I also think that Kallen shoots Suzaku and is forced to help Lelouch. However it might be another person as well, who knows.
Also curious what’ll happen to C.C.
No the question for the next and final season is who’ll be alive at the very end. I think Lelouch will die for sure, the ret maybe. The story is open so wide that everything is possible.
